Heat Pumps in Worcester

A heat pump is not a boiler with a different badge. It runs at lower flow temperatures for longer, and it only works well where the property, the radiators and the controls have been designed around it. We survey your home room by room before recommending anything — and if a heat pump is the wrong answer for your property, we will tell you that too.

What the work involves

Carried out by our own Gas Safe registered engineers — we do not subcontract the work out.

  • Heat loss survey

Room-by-room heat loss calculation and a look at insulation, glazing and air leakage, so the unit is sized on the property rather than a rule of thumb.

  • Emitter and cylinder design

Radiator sizes checked against the low flow temperatures a heat pump runs at, with larger emitters or underfloor heating specified where they are needed, and a correctly sized hot water cylinder.

  • Air source installation

Outdoor unit positioned for airflow, access and neighbour noise, with insulated pipework, a clean route and a properly protected wet system.

  • Controls and commissioning

Weather compensation and heating curves set on the property, flow temperatures dialled in, and a walkthrough of how to run the system before we leave.

  • Servicing and repairs

Annual checks on filters, coils, refrigerant charge and controls, plus fault-finding on systems we did not install.

Common problems we see

  • A heat pump running constantly without the rooms reaching temperature
  • High electricity bills from a unit that was oversized, undersized or wrongly set up
  • Radiators warm at the top and lukewarm at the bottom on low flow temperatures
  • Hot water that runs out quickly or takes too long to reheat
  • Noise, vibration or neighbour concerns from a poorly positioned outdoor unit
  • Repeated defrost cycles and icing in cold, wet weather
  • Systems fitted without a heat loss survey and now fighting the property

Why choose A-Select

  • Sized on a room-by-room heat loss survey, not a catalogue figure
  • One local team for the heat pump, the wet system, the cylinder and the controls
  • Emitters and insulation dealt with before the unit is ordered, not after
  • Servicing and fault-finding from the Worcester team who installed it

FAQs

Heat Pumps — your questions answered

Will a heat pump work in an older Worcester home?

+

Often yes, but rarely for nothing. Older properties usually need radiator upsizing, loft insulation and draught proofing before a heat pump runs economically. We survey the house first and set out what it needs — including if a modern boiler is the better answer.

Do I have to replace all my radiators?

+

Not always. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so they need more emitter surface. We measure each radiator against the room's heat loss and quote only the ones that genuinely need replacing or upsizing.

How much does a heat pump cost to run?

+

That depends on the insulation, the emitter sizes, the flow temperature and how the controls are set. A well-designed system running at a low flow temperature is efficient; a badly designed one running hot will not be. We show you the design figures before you commit.

Can a heat pump provide hot water as well as heating?

+

Yes. Most air source systems store hot water in a cylinder rather than making it on demand, so the cylinder is sized to the household's usage. We check your hot water needs at survey stage.

Are grants available towards a heat pump?

+

Grant schemes come and go, and eligibility depends on the property, the equipment and the installer's accreditation. We will tell you honestly where you stand before you commit to a price.

Do heat pumps need servicing?

+

Yes, once a year. Filters and coils clog, refrigerant charges and sensors need checking, and controls drift. Annual servicing is what keeps running costs where the design said they would be.
