How to improve central heating efficiency
Most efficiency gains come from four unglamorous things: clean water, correct balancing, sensible controls and annual servicing.
Clean water first
A system full of sludge makes the pump work harder, slows heat transfer and leaves rooms lukewarm. Cleaning the system and dosing it with inhibitor is usually the single most effective improvement on an older installation.
Balance the system
Radiators nearest the pump often take more than their share of flow, leaving distant rooms cold and tempting people to turn the thermostat up. Balancing sets the flow correctly so the whole house heats at a similar pace.
Get the controls right
A programmable or smart thermostat set to match how you actually use the house prevents heating empty rooms during empty hours. Add thermostatic radiator valves so individual rooms can be tuned, and consider zoning upstairs and downstairs separately.
Service it annually
A boiler burning outside its correct parameters wastes fuel quietly. Annual servicing keeps combustion right, keeps the warranty valid and catches the wear that would otherwise become a breakdown.
Do not overlook the basics
Bleeding radiators, keeping furniture away from them, and making sure the boiler's flow temperature is set sensibly for a condensing appliance all contribute. None of it is dramatic on its own; together it adds up.
