What is a power flush?
A deep clean of the heating system — and often the difference between a new boiler lasting well and struggling from day one.
What it does
A power flush pushes water through the system at high velocity, combined with a chemical cleanser, to lift out the sludge, rust and scale that accumulate over years of operation. Each radiator is flushed in turn until the water runs clear, and the system is then dosed with fresh corrosion inhibitor.
When a system needs one
Radiators cold at the bottom, black water when bleeding, a noisy boiler or pump, slow warm-up, and repeated pump or valve failures all point towards a dirty system. So does a system that has run for many years without inhibitor ever being topped up.
Before a new boiler
Modern condensing boilers have narrow waterways and are far less tolerant of debris than the appliances they replace. If existing system water is dirty, cleaning it is not optional — manufacturers generally require a clean, inhibited system for the warranty to stand.
Keeping it clean afterwards
A magnetic filter catches circulating debris before it reaches the boiler, and it should be cleaned at each annual service. Inhibitor levels are worth checking periodically too, since they deplete over time.
