Signs your boiler needs repairing

Boilers rarely fail without warning. Here are the symptoms worth acting on before the appliance stops altogether.

Noises that were not there before

Kettling — a rumbling or whistling like a boiling kettle — usually points to scale or debris in the heat exchanger restricting flow. Banging and gurgling often indicate air or circulation problems. None of these are urgent on the day they start, but all of them get worse.

Pressure that keeps dropping

If you are topping the system up more than occasionally, water is leaving it somewhere. That could be a small leak on pipework or a radiator valve, a passing pressure relief valve, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Repeated topping up also introduces fresh oxygenated water, which accelerates corrosion inside the system.

Lockouts and fault codes

An occasional lockout that resets and behaves for a fortnight is still a fault. Modern boilers log fault codes for a reason, and an engineer can read those codes alongside live readings to work out whether it is ignition, a sensor, the fan or something else entirely.

Heating or hot water, but not both

On a combi, hot water working while heating does not — or the other way round — commonly points to the diverter valve. It is a well-known failure and a repairable one, but leaving it usually means losing the other side too.

Cold radiators and slow warm-up

Cold at the bottom suggests sludge; cold at the top suggests air. Whole radiators staying cold can be balancing, a stuck valve or poor circulation. If several radiators are affected, the system itself is more likely to be at fault than the boiler.
